Kemetic Yoga: The Resurrection of Healing Practices from Ancient Egypt

You probably already know of the yogic traditions from Ancient India. But did you know that the Ancient Egyptian cultures also practiced yoga?


Similar to yoga from India, Kemetic yoga, or Smai Tawi, combines postures with meditation and breathing exercises. Kemetic Yoga Roots

You know those wall engravings, paintings and murals seen on the tombs and temples of Ancient Egypt?

Long ago, civilizations told stories by etching walls with paintings and hieroglyphs, Ancient Egypt's writing system. These scriptures hold some of the earliest illustrations of yoga which show various sacred geometric positions and postures.

Historians estimate that yoga originates from the Indus Valley around 3300 BCE. Most likely, the yogic traditions you have practiced, like Hatha or Vinyasa, indeed come from India. Evidence of yoga from the Nile Valley civilizations of upper Kemet and lower Kemet in Ancient Egypt may actually predate practices from India.

Archaeologists found representations of the falcon-headed God of the sky, Horus, and the powerful, crocodile-like Sobek tying rope to symbols of the lungs and spine. This would indicate a divine practice that creates a mind-body connection to consciousness similar to yoga, according to research published in The SAGE Encyclopedia of African Cultural Heritage in North America.

From these wall paintings, we discover Kemetic yoga postures practiced thousands of years ago in the Nile Valley. This yoga system from Ancient Egypt, then known as Kemet, is believed to be one of the first establishments of its kind.

Ancient Egyptian Mythology

During Kemetic yoga, the practitioner channels powerful energies of the Gods and Goddesses worshiped by the Ancient Egyptians.


The Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egyptian mythology symbolize the cosmic forces of mother nature and the human mind. By embodying these deity archetypes through yoga, we can grasp a deeper understanding of divine energy.

Similar to Hindu cultures, many people still harness the power of divine energy by worshipping deities. You don’t have to believe in the deities to benefit from their power. Visualizing a powerful God or Goddess helps tap into the energy that they represent.

Close your eyes during your practice and picture these divine entities. You will feel inspired to embody those qualities that they represent, such as:

  • Isis: Goddess of Fertility, Motherhood, Protection, and Magic

  • Sekhmet: Lioness Goddess of healing to ward off illness

  • Horus: Falcon-headed God of power and healing. The “Eye of Horus” wards off evil

  • Osiris: The green-skinned God ruling over vegetation, healing, and fertility

  • Anubis: The wolf-headed God of the underworld, the dead, and the afterlife

  • Serket: The scorpion Goddess of healing, nature, animals, medicine, and magic

Kemetic Yoga Poses

With each pose, you can embody a different layer of divine energy while exploring elements of your consciousness. Igniting the light within and inviting us to radiate beams of loving, healing energy around our beings.

1. Pose of Isis

Stand upright with hands in prayer at your heart centre. Lift the right foot up and extend it forward. As you place your weight on the right foot, extend the left leg back, with the back foot pointed. (Pictured below)


Slowly lower to a seated position. Sit with weight on the back left foot. Extend the upper chest as you slowly twist to the left side. Place the right elbow on the inside of the right new. Don’t forget to breathe! (Pictured below)


Rotate the palms down, as you remain in a seated twist. (Pictured below)


On the inhale, raise the arms should heighten. Gaze forward and channel your inner Goddess. Exhale and gaze behind you. Hold the pose as desired. Then repeat on the opposite side. (Pictured below)


2. Pose of Ausar

This twisting pose releases tension in the upper back. To enter the pose, stand upright. Place the right palm in the center of the chest. Take the left palm and place it over the left hand. Open and engage the upper chest as you twist to the right from the thoracic (upper) spine. Repeat on the opposite side. (Pictured below)


3. Pyramid Pose

Look familiar? You may know this pose as “downward-facing dog”. In Kemetic yoga, the pyramid pose resembles the impressive tombs of the Pharaohs. Enjoy a full body stretch, deep in the spine and along the shoulders. (Pictured below)


4. Pose of Selkhet

Harness the power of Selkhet, the scorpion Goddess of medicine and healing. Stand upright with arms by your side. Engage shoulders to the back. Lift arms with palms upright, to receive guidance and healing. (Pictured below)


5. Pose of Ka

Connect to your divine spirit, your Ka. Stand upright. Bring arms upward into a cactus like position. Tilt the head back while lengthening the chest and upper body. Gently return the head upright, facing forward. Repeat. (Pictured below)
